Family of Blood

That may have just broken me into tiny little pieces.
Quotes may be slightly paraphrased, due to my rubbish short-term memory.
I loved Martha's line "God, you're rubbish as a human."
I liked the way John Smith found he couldn't shoot.
John crying that all he wanted was to be John Smith caused my brother to send several disgusted looks my way.
The whole scene in the cottage, where John and Joan both realise what has to be done was just wonderful, in a sad way. "Because he's lonely./And that's the man you want me to become?"
And the way John Smith raged against being seen as a disposable disguise, rather than a being with a life. "He didn't think about falling in love? What kind of man is he?"
And the snapshots of what could have been "He can never have a life like that" were all they could have wished for- if he was a ordinary human.
I think the contrast between Smith and the Doctor really highlights the Doctor's characteristics. He's much more flippant, he babbles, and it all sounds so familiar. Also, David Tennant acted brilliantly.
I am definitely uncomfortable with the punishments meted out to the Family though. I thought they were all going to die anyway? Yes, this is the Doctor that said "no second chances" and "I'm so old now. I used to have so much mercy." But where did he leave this chained Father? What fun, to have the Daughter staring out at him in every mirror he looks in. What if that scarecrow falls over or something, and people remove the hood to find a 'body'? Isn't imprisoning them for eternity more dangerous than letting them die?
He asked Joan to go with him! Of course, she was never going to accept. Perhaps he only asked her because he felt he had an obligation. Perhaps she found it insulting or a slight to his memory. And it must be very difficult to see a physical double, when the person you loved is dead. It reminds me of The Time Travellers
And yay for Tim surviving, and the Doctor and Martha going to a remembrance service. I think the scenes in the trenches were very effective and well-staged.
That's longer than I expected.
