Dear Person,
One clip is not enough to justify your assertion that Sixties companions = screamers. Maybe they are 'best known for their lung power' but that's only because of That Stupid Stereotype.
You're making me remember Paul Parsons, Person. Stop that now.
To those that actually bother to watch anything broadcast in black and white, they are known to be Rather More Awesome Than That Stupid Stereotype. In fact, I've just looked 'The Moonbase' up on Wikipedia and from the short sypnosis alone, I can pick out two sentences which seem to indicate there is Polly (a girl, woman, female) awesome there (remind me to watch more Polly, soon) and that she does, in fact, serve more of a purpose in the story than to scream and be comforted.
Although I will agree with the statement 'Fortunately, male characters were always there to give support' because saving the world single-handedly, even when More Awesome Than You, can be tricky.
I love my TARDIS teams. (Also Sarah Jane's 'gang' is made of shiny win-ness.)
Also, screaming ≠ bad. Screaming = perfectly natural and understandable reaction. I don't think I would be brave enough to travel with the Doctor. If I did, I'm sure there would be quite a bit of me screaming.
Yes, it's another so-late-it's-early post from me.

Date: 2008-10-30 05:22 am (UTC)...Do people forget Barbara running over those Daleks in The Dalek Invasion of Earth, and her sheer awesome in The Aztecs? Do they forget Zoe beating the crap out of the Karkus in The Mind Robber?
And Polly being awesome as a whole, of course. We can't forget the awesome Polly.
...Yeah, I have a lot of arguments on this subject. It's fun.

Date: 2008-10-30 05:47 am (UTC)Maybe they are simply unaware, having never seen any Classic Who. Maybe they do forget. Or maybe it's simply that the awesome is, in their heads, cancelled out by the fact they're 'weak' enough to scream sometimes.
Anyone holding this viewpoint has, in my opinion, never actually watched Classic Who (because I simply can't conceive of anyone actually watching the stories and coming away with this idea). Therefore their view is uninformed and therefore not worth arguing with.
They're wrong. They don't know what they're talking about. If they refuse to see the awesome, their loss. End of story.
That doesn't mean I don't make similar posts every few months pointing out the awesome of Classic (especially Sixties because they seem to get most of 'scream and look cute' criticism dumped on them specifically) companions whenever I get particularly annoyed at seeing this viewpoint broadcast.
I can't be that philosophical. Everything in that paragraph stands, except I can't help but be irritated by their wrongness/ignorance/closed-mindness so it's not really the end of the story. It just goes round in circles.

Date: 2008-10-30 05:54 am (UTC)They probably watched up to the first scream and turned it off... which still makes no sense, really. I guess some people just think a screamer is an weakling, no matter how much awesome they exude. Which is hell for companions like Polly and Dodo, of course.
It's a neverending circle of stupidity, fail and awesome apparently being negated by a tendency to scream.
Sometimes, this fandom makes me want to hurt people.

Date: 2008-10-30 10:18 am (UTC)I hate people coming to daft, offensive conclusions like this, please tell me people knocked some sense into them or else I'm gonna have to do it and my blood pressure does not need that crap.
*breathes* I'm done.
Wait, no, I'm not. Someone should also link them to that awesome vid of girl companions kicking ass.
